FOSSEE Summer Fellowship 2018

1. Screening level Task descriptions:
 


Case 1:

  1. Scenario- A mother is changing the newborn baby’s nappy.
  2. Scenario- A mother is feeding her one-year old baby using a spoon. She is also talking to her baby with eye-to-eye contact while feeding.
  3. Scenario- A woman is registering her pregnancy in an Anganwadi Centre.
  4. Scenario- A mother is forcefully feeding her one-year old child.
  5. Scenario- A pregnant woman is sitting on the couch in a bad posture, watching TV and eating junk food.
  6. Scenario- A mother is feeding her child forcefully and the baby is spitting the food out.
  7. Grouped image of 2 graphics-
    • In the first graphic, the baby’s food is kept on a table and it is covered using a net.
    • In the second graphic, the baby's food is kept uncovered on a table and flies are sitting on the food in one of the bowls

  8. Graphic to show a myth: the amount of milk secretion in a lactating mother depends on the size of her breast.
    Hint: Show larger breasts giving more milk as compared to smaller breasts.
  9. Graphic to show a myth: a pregnant woman should not disclose her pregnancy.
    Hint: Show a pregnant woman with one hand on her stomach and one finger of the other hand on her mouth.
  10. Scenario- Mother is feeding her nine-month old baby with a feeding bottle.
  11. Graphic to show a myth: a pregnant mother should be eating for two people.
    Hint: In the first graphic, show a non-pregnant woman eating from one plate. In the second graphic, show the same woman, now pregnant, eating from 2 plates.
  12. Grouped image of 2 graphics-
    • In the first graphic, show a mother feeding her 18-month old child from a bowl.
    • In the second graphic, show that the child is telling the mother that he/ she doesn’t want to eat the food.

  13. Graphic to show a myth: Saffron milk and Coconut water make the baby’s complexion fairer.
    Hint: Show a dark skin coloured baby.  Show a mother consuming Saffron milk and Coconut water.  Then show the mother feeding the baby.  Lastly show that the dark skin coloured baby has now changed into a fair baby.
  14. Scenario- A mother who is pregnant with her 2nd child, is breastfeeding her first baby.
  15. Scenario- A mother is sitting in front of a doctor. The doctor is talking to the mother.  The doctor's accessories are kept on the table.
  16. Show graphic for- The head and hands of a woman holding a vada-pav or burger, close to her mouth. She is holding the vada-pav with both her hands. This graphic should clearly show the following points: (a) The woman's mouth is wide open  (b) Her fingers and thumb holding the vada-pav, are parallel to her lips (c) She is holding the vada-pav at the right distance from her mouth to take a big bite.
  17. Graphic for abortion: Show the umbilical cord being cut inside a pregnant woman’s womb.


Case 2:

  1. A two-year old baby is having lunch along with other family members.  Highlight that the baby is wearing a bib.
  2. Graphic to show a myth: If the mother doesn’t have any obvious complaints during her pregnancy, she shouldn’t go for regular check-ups. However, show another mother with various pregnancy complaints such as pain, blood discharge, etc. visiting a doctor for regular check-ups.
  3. Graphic to show that baby’s skin colour is affected by the genes of her parents.
    Hint: Show a map of India in the background.  Show the face of a female from Kashmir or Punjab, on the map.  Show the face of a male from Kerala or Tamil Nadu on the map.  Draw dotted lines from the female and male to the face of a baby.  This baby should either have the skin colour of the father or the mother.
  4. Graphic for miscarriage:
    Hint: Show a sad mother holding her womb. Show that her uterus is empty. Show an unborn embryo on the side.
  5. Scenario: Pregnant woman is eating from one plate. An elder lady has brought another plate with the same amount of food and is asking the pregnant woman to finish both plates. Do not use text.
  6. Graphic to show a myth: If the mother has been unsuccessful in breastfeeding her first baby then she cannot successfully breastfeed the second baby, as well.
    Hint: Show a mother trying to breastfeed her second baby while thinking about her unsuccessful breastfeeding experience with her 1st baby. Show her first child as a weak baby sitting besides her.
  7. Graphic to show the cycle of malnutrition: Malnourished women give birth to malnourished daughters. Malnourished daughters grow up to be malnourished mothers and then they give birth to malnourished daughters.
  8. Graphic to show the hunger signals of a 7 to 8-month old baby: here the 8-month old baby is pointing towards a bowl of food. The bowl of food is kept on the floor.  The baby is sitting on her mother’s lap, who is herself sitting on the floor.
  9. Show a graphic for fullness signals/satiety cues of a 12-month old baby: here the baby is playing with her food and throwing the food on the floor.
  10. Scenario: A mother is feeding her baby who is playing with her toys and is not interested in eating her food.
  11. Grouped image of 2 graphics-
    • In the first graphic, a mother is sitting in front of her two-year old child, who is not ready to eat her food and is pushing the bowl of yellow coloured food towards the mother.
    • In the second graphic, a mother is giving chocolates to her two-year old child. She is holding a packet of chips in her other hand.

  12. Show a graphic of a mother breastfeeding her 9-month old baby while talking on a phone.
  13. Graphic for Football hold for breastfeeding: A mother is sitting in cross-legged position and feeding her baby from her right breast. There are 4 pillows on the mother's right side. The top-most pillow is placed diagonally over the other pillows and the mother's thigh. The mother is holding her baby with her right hand. She is holding the lower part of the baby's head with the thumb and fingers of her right hand. The mother's right elbow and forearm are resting on the pillow.  The baby's legs pass through the mother's right armpit onto the pillows.   The baby is facing the mother.   The mother is holding her right breast with her left hand in a 'C' shape hold from the side. Her left thumb is placed on the upper part of her breast, while her index and middle finger are placed on the lower part of her breast.
  14. Scenario- A mother is lying on a hospital bed.  Her upper body is uncovered and her lower body is covered with a green cloth. She has just delivered her baby.  A health worker is placing the newborn baby on the mother's bare abdomen, in such a way that the baby's tummy touches the mother's abdomen and the baby's head is between the mother's breasts.
  15. Graphic for Laid-back hold for breastfeeding: A mother is resting in supine position on the bed. Her head and upper body are well-supported and slightly lifted with 2-3 pillows. Her baby is lying on the mother's body.  The whole front part of the baby's body is gently pressed against the mother's stomach.  The baby is deeply attached to her mother's right breast.  The mother is supporting the baby's body with both her hands.
  16. Scenario-  The mother introducing one food at a time after every 3 to 4 days to assess if baby is allergic towards any particular food.  Show the food at the tip of the spoon while feeding the baby.
  17. Graphic to show fluid recommendations for a baby during illness. Show two graphics-
    • In the first graphic, show that a sick 8-month old baby is lying on the bed and the mother is offering water to the baby from a small bowl using a spoon after every one hour.
    • In the second graphic, show that a sick 18-month old baby is lying on the bed and the mother is offering water to the baby from a glass after every one hour.

  18. Graphic to show that a 2-year old child should be allowed to see, smell and touch the food.
    Hint: There will be a group of 3 graphics here:
    • In the first graphic, the healthy yellow colored food is kept on a small table, and a 9-month old baby is excitedly looking at the food. The mother is observing her baby from the corner of the room.
    • In the second graphic, the baby is bending towards the food and smelling it.
    • In the third graphic, the baby is grasping and playing with the food and the mother is observing the baby from the corner of the room.


2. Guidelines to be followed for creation of graphics:

  1. Only graphics created by you should be submitted.
  2. Graphics must be created using Inkscape/GIMP/Synfig/Blender only.  Use of any other software is not permitted.
  3. You can download and learn to use these software by clicking here.
  4. Submit a total of 30 graphics by selecting 15 descriptions each from Case 1 and Case 2.
  5. The graphics should not contain any kind of text.
  6. Follow the sample graphic patterns as shown in Spoken Tutorial for Breastfeeding Latching
  7. Final image size should be 800x600 pixels with resolution 300 dpi.


3. Guidelines to be followed for submission of graphics:
  1. All the graphics should be submitted in png image format, along with their original source files. 
  2. Name the files as Case1-1, Case1-2, Case1-3................  and Case2-1, Case2-2, Case2-3.................................
  3. Please use corresponding names for the png and the source file of each graphic. For eg:  Case1-4.svg  Case1-4.png
  4. Separate the 30 source files and 30 png images into two sub-folders.  
  5. Then compress them into a single zip folder
  6. Name the zip folder with your name.


4. Technical requirements:

  • Proficiency in Inkscape, GIMP, Blender or Synfig.
  • The applicant should be able to create digital illustrations and 2D animations, draw excellent character drawings and have good color knowledge.
5. Procedure to submit:

Submission portal will be available from 17 March 2018. Until that time please start working on the submission tasks and be ready with the  submissions (png image and source file).

7. Evaluation Criteria:
 

Applicants who submit graphics that meet the given brief most accurately, will be selected for the Fellowship.

Please note that the selected applicants will have to agree to transfer the full copyright of their work to the Spoken Tutorial project.
